I just finished reading an article about a new topical Anti-Inflammatory Cream called SURPASS. This drug sounds very
interesting to those of us who have been using
Legend, etc. It is only available by prescription through a veterinary. I would love
to know if anyone else knows about it or has
had first hand experience with it.

Joanne,

I was at the equine hospital in my area and asked about SURPASS. The veterinarian there (Dr. Henry) said that they have been using it on some cases and did not feel it was effective on the horses they used it on... though they had not as yet made a final judgement on it.

At the same time, my friend decided to try it. She took two tubes and, if I'm not mistaken, each tube is supposed to last 7 days. I will post her opinion here once she tells me what she thinks.

By the way, if you use Adequan (polysuffated Glycosaminoglycan) a generic version is now available. I've been using it and it seems to work the same as Adequan. It is sold under the name ChonDrOprotec and (like Adequan) is prescription only. It has the same active ingredient and dosage as Adequan, but is extremely less expensive.

Adequan was costing me $45 per dosage, the ChonDrOprotec $9.

Dr. O, what is your experience with any of the above drugs (Adequan, ChonDrOprotec, Surpass) ... and the use of generics in general?

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the information about Surpass. I'll
look forward to hearing what your friends opinion
is after she uses the product. So far I have only used Legend and it is extremely expensive at
$80 a shot.

Take care.

I have not used Surpass, Rick. I believe it is a topical application of a NSAID (diclofenac sodium) and am not sure how effective this might be.

We have information on the generic Adequans and other joint treatments at, Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » The Joint Protective Treatments.

I just used Surpass on my 18 year old mare, for soreness in the knee. It was extremely effective in alleviating her pain. I used it for a week, rubbed on once a day. My vet was part of a trial for it before it was released, and he said at the trial barn that they could tell within days which horses got Surpass, and which had the placebo.

I believe it's more for short term pain as opposed to longer term, so I'd check the guidelines for use.
