Anyone use this supplement? I am thinking about putting both my old guy and my yearling on it at the recommendation of my vet. My yearling is currently on Missing Link (like PP, a flax seed based supplement) which I love, but PP seems to have more vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and electrolytes added which I may need as both horses are on minimal feed due to being at high risk for founder (old guy due to suspected Cushings and ease of weight gain and young guy due to high muscle enzymes/insulin resistance already showing up on his CBCs - plus the fact that he is a pony).

Old guy gets 3 quarts of Equine Senior and 1 quart of beet pulp a day along with glucosamine/MSM. Yearling gets a handful of Strategy top dressed with corn oil and Missing Link.

Anyone with experience with PP (especially as it compares to Missing Link) feel free to post!

Hi Debbie,

I've used Platinum for over four years and I'm sold on it. I initially started using it on a post surgical horse and was so impressed with the bloom on her that I started using it on the other horses. I especially like what it did for my Cushing's mare's coat, which had become very scummy, that's the only way to describe it. She was always itchy too. Now she is dappled and beautiful. Good feet and attitudes and not too hot like some feed supps do to them.

I also have a mini on it and put my filly on it. I don't feed them more than a handful of grain as they are on rich pasture and I have to watch grazing time so I worry about nutrients! I feed Timothy hay.

My old mares look half their age. It's expensive so if you have a lot of horses it's not feasible. I know big breeders who use it on their broodmares while in foal and show stock, however. I buy it directly from the company and have it sent to my house fed ex on a set schedule. It's the easiest way for me. I re-adjust it as neccesary.

I've also wondered about this product as I've heard very good things about it. I have three old girls that are on Eq. Senior, so I'm wondering, did the vet say to keep them on the Eq. Senior and feed them the PP also?

The vet said Equine Sr is ok since it has greater nutritional value than straight beet pulp. However, she did recommend a low carb/starch and high fat diet. She also recommended keeping the old guy slightly underweight on purpose so as not to aggravate any laminitic tendencies, but to supplement so he could still get the extras he needs.

She recommended the PP for the old guy because his CBC came back anemic (low white and red blood cell counts), his coat has a lot of dandruff and his eyes run - all signs of an aging and a poor immune system. The vet told me the PP would help the old guy through the winter.

The yearling is fine the way he is, and very healthy. I just thought, as long as I am getting it for the old guy, I may as well put the yearling on it too so I have one less supplement to keep track of!

PP costs about .72 per day, Missing Link costs about .60 per day.

Hi,
Platinum Performance was also recommended by our vet. We have had both of our horses on a number of their products for a while; they're doing really well!

I have been looking at this particular product for my horse who is recuperating from an illness and lost a lot of weight. But do you know if it is ok to give on top of a complete feed? Bonnie

Bonnie, I would call the people at PP. They are very helpful and they will recommend based on what you are feeding now.

I have dealt with them a couple of times, and they are extremely helpful.

If you are feeding a good quality complete feed and forage, this product is unlikely to add any important nutrients to the diet with the exception of energy. Being excess these nutrients are either metabolized to energy or thrown away as it represents excess the body cannot use. But PP does add energy in a very palatable but very expensive product. Under the conditions I outline above 1-2 fl. oz. of vegetable oil would exceed the energy in a scoop of PP.
