Neosporin is making a new product which is summarized below (from their website). Can I use this on my horse's scars she received from getting tangled in barbed wire about 3 years ago? One scar, in particular, is raised and hairless. I wouldn't mind trying it if I knew it was safe for horses. Their only warning is that it would be a choking hazard for pets, but I don't think they had horses in mind. Also, the product was tested on animals.

From the website:
Neosporin® Scar SolutionTM contains 28 silicone scar sheets that are indicated for use on raised or discolored scars.

Silicone sheet technology is clinically proven to significantly improve the appearance of scars and has been used by burn centers and plastic surgeons for years.

Neosporin Scar Solution sheets use patented Silon®* technology, and are believed to mimic the natural barrier function of normal skin…improving the appearance of scars, both new and old.

Silicone sheets have been shown to improve the appearance of new scars and even old scars that are years old. Neosporin Scar Solution should be worn for the full 12 weeks.

Neosporin Scar Solution is effective on keloids and hypertrophic scars, which are distinguished by a raised and discolored appearance.

Neosporin Scar Solution sheets are effective on existing scars and may help prevent the formation of scars on newly, closed, dry wounds.

Can I use the product on my pet? No. Sheets may present a choking hazard to pets.

Silicone sheeting technology is clinically proven and has been used for years by burn centers and plastic surgeons for management of scars.

Neosporin Scar Solution utilizes this same technology to significantly improve the appearance of scars.

Silicone sheets are believed to work by creating an occlusive barrier that mimics the natural barrier function of the skin.

Neosporin Scar Solution does not contain neomycin.

Neosporin Scar Solution does not contain antibiotics.

Neosporin Scar Solution should not be used on open wounds or unhealed skin.

No, no part of the product or it's packaging contains latex.

The potential side effect consists primarily of transient skin irritation.

Product is not sterile and does not contain antibiotics.

Do not use on open wounds or unhealed skin.

An interesting product Letizia and as long as you can prevent your horse from choking on it, I do not see any problem with trying it.

My husband is a plastic & reconstructive surgeon and we will sometimes prescribe or give samples of silicone sheeting or even the new "Neosporin Scar Solution".

I will however forewarn you that it can be very costly and studies have NOT been proven that it truly does work.

Some of our patients like it and think that it does work. Where others saw no results or change at all.

If someone does figure out what REALLY can help with scarring, stretch marks etc. they will be a millionare.

For the mean time, I would try all of them sparingly. Because they are costly and AGAIN not proven...

Good luck! Let us know if you try and it does work.
