My mare is very difficult to worm and my vet is always having to do it with the liquid wormer. I saw a wormer that has an apple taste and you just mix it with your feed like a supplement. How well does this type of wormer work? Also, is it as good as zimectrin gold?

You might want to try the "Easy Wormer" My sister tried it on an older brood mare I purchased who in the past would clear the area with her fighting. Worked like a charm and the mare stayed calm and never got upset, and nobody was in danger of getting hurt, including her. Also works for giving any oral medicines.

I can't remember what all it has in it but I know that I checked it againts Quest and it had some of the same ingredients. The name of the wormer is apple wormer. I will try to get more info on it and will write again. Also, nancy I bought an easy wormer thinking that it would make my life easier but after the first time my mare knows what is coming and will not have any part of it but thank you for the suggestion.

Dr.
I am trying to find out if one mixes the tube of Exodus antihelminthic paste in warm water, then dilute it completely, lets say, a quart of warm water, and then for attraction purposes, add alfalfa cubes, and then feed this liquid porrige to your horse, is the exodus as efficatious as if you used the paste only?

I wrote to Exodus and they merely replied: we have no studies on this. How stupid of them.

I don't know if it cuts the efficiency of the wormer but i have an old horse that gets very violent if you try to stick anything in his mouth. We've tried everything/and training no avail.

So I just put his wormer in his grain and ad water he can't refuse soaked nummies. he is a thousand pounds I dose him for 1250.

His fecals show no worms so it must work.

I understand wormers are suggested to be given at times other than mealtime - I guess because the stomach is suppose to be closer to empty. I always wormed at feeding time for years until I read this a few months ago. I have to wonder though when a horse's stomach is ever close to empty? They are always grazing or eating hay.

I always wait to worm the horses at a time when they aren't eating because when they are eating, there is always a wad of grass or hay stuck up in the molars, and the horses can spit out the wormer so much easier if it gets mixed with what they are chewing.

John this is not stupid it is practical. There product was not designed to work this way and testing and getting approval so that they can say different is no small matter. Can you tell me what is in Exodus and I will be glad to comment on what I think about the process. In general however dewormers are far more effective when given on an empty stomach.

Dr. O
thank you for your timely response. I just received a second response from Bimeda, the folks that make the Exodus I use.
Anyhow, it said that they can only put certain info on the package, according to the Federal Government and that item is not something they deal with.
But I appreciate your answer. Yes, I was a bit perturbed, ergo, the use of "stupid". In the end I think i am the stupid one.

Exodus is Pyrantel Pamoate. What do you think?

We do not recommend pyrantel as a regular treatment, for more on this see John see, Care for Horses » Deworming & Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming.

Also went to the Bimeda site-no distributors listed, no available MSDS sheets, and no direct contact. As Dr O says: hmmmm!
Have worked with trusted manufacturers and distributors for over 30 years-always got great support in times of any problems.

After I saw the internet post, I returned 50 Bimectrin wormers to Country Supply, ordered 50 replacement wormers of Equimectrin. The Customer Service rep was quite pissy about the whole thing, but, they made the switch. They wanted to know why I would beleive one or two internet e-mails, and not the letter sent out by the company. Quite frankly folks, I serve 17 years in law enforcement, and have been a licensed PI for many years, and can tell you all from experience on both sides of big business, they ALWAYS deny deny deny, and then settle quietly out of court, with a gag order if they are wrong. I told this to CS, and explained that I did not want to be in court for 5 or 6 years, because my horses died of a de-wormer. There are too many other wormers that work and have not been the subject of this discussion.

David, with all due respect, you are completely correct about large companies and their responses (or the lack thereof). However, if you have been following the information thus far regarding this particular incident in Texas (Kerry), and with your being a detective and PI, don't you smell something fishy here? It really does not make much sense (see the post from joj today). Plus, this girl's morbid description of her dead horses and the fact that it has now been a month since the incident and we still have not gotten the results of the necropsies. However, I totally understand that NO ONE wants to throw caution to the wind, but lets not over react here. There is more going on with this incident than meets the eye.

Now, absolutely. However, at the time she was posting, it seemed very credable, she had responded to some questions on the list serves and had updates. She also sent out a e-mail that she was contacted by the company attorney, and basically told to be quiet or be sued. Maybe that is why she has disappeared from the radar. Or..it is a very elaborate hoax. It will interesting to see what happens.

David - I can't believe Country Supply allowed you to make an exchange when they told me that wormers were exempt from their return policy. How did you approach them? I'm angry now!!!
