Posted on Saturday, Feb 26, 2005 - 4:11 pm: Are there any known corralation between feeding the daily dewormer of Strongid 2x and an elevated liver enzyme? I have recently had my horse dignosed with gastric ulcers, upon running blood work it was found that his liver enzymes were very high. I tested my other 2 horses and so was theirs. His liver biopsy was non-dignostic and the only pertinent factor between these 3 is the soil(which we have it out being tested) and the daily de-wormer. And my friend called and said her sister is in vet school and heard that one of the daily dewormer has been linked to elevated liver enzymes?? |

They suggested we transfer him to the University of FL. They treated him with antibiotics and did the liver biopsy which cam back un-dignostic. He was also dignosed with ulcers(hence the colic episode when he ate). While he was up there I wanted to take blood from my other 2 horses just for my own peace of mind; well their GGT were in the 180 range 2 wks ago.. Gilbert came home a week ago this pass Sat. his GGT started to come down to 92 upon DC redraw in a wk.. last Fri. all 3 were drawn and the other 2 are in the GGT 380 range with no other apparnet syptoms at this time, Gilbert are cont. to come down.. The only supplement they all are on is minerals and Strongid 2x; but the 2 have been on it for a very long time and the one was started on it 5 mths ago.. I am devistated and at a major loss!!! |

What are the chances the lab values are incorrect if there are no other abnormalities? For more see Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Mouth, Esophagus, and Liver » Liver Disease and Failure. I have been reading on Idiopathis Hepatitis is horses, and it kind of fits the bill with my horses. My vets swear it is something they are eating; but we have been over and over our pastures, barn, and they are off the Strongid now? I don't know, it is just odd that my gelding had a very high temp, which 50%of horses from what I read, with hepatitis get and a very low WBC count as well. His are now beginning to come down; but he was on very stong antibiotics at the University? I don't know, I am at a loss |
