Does anyone have a view on the efficacy of Pentosan versus Adequan. I have one vet who swears by pentosan but everyone I know that has used it says it doesn't work and that this has been proven in clinical studies.

Hello Nicola, There is no proof that pentosan polysulfate (PPS)does not have some clinical efficacy Nicola. Support for it is largely anecdotal, though some of that positive report comes from the arthritis gurus of Colorado State. Then again the work that supports IM Adequan is not written in stone. For more on what current research says on both of these drugs, recommendations for use, and dosage see the article on Adequan. DrO

Hi Nicola, I have used Pentosan Polysulfate and Adequan. I felt the Pentosan worked. (I ordered mine from horsemedsonline.com in Australia). I researched the drug when I had a horse with OA/DJD. Here are a couple of articles that may help provide more background information. Current Treatments for Traumatic Synovitis, Capsulitis, and Osteoarthritis https://www.ivis.org/proceedings/aaep/2001/91010100180.pdf and Evaluation of Pentosan Polysulfate https://www.equineortho.colostate.edu/pdf/pentosan_polysulfate.pdf Is you question more FYI related or are you looking to treat something more specific? Nicola, I can never find what I'm looking for until I have sent the information. This is a nice summary of many things, but it discusses Adequan and Pentosan. https://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=10800&kw=lameness Laura
