I just received a bill from the breeding farm and wanted to make sure I am not missing anything before I call. My mare absorbed last year sometime between 40 and 60 days. She has checked in foal at 14 days this year but the bill indicates she has been given 10 days of regumate and a 5cc BET 300mg Injectible progestrone. It also indicates a Progestrone Assay of .3 (very very low). Given the conclusion in the article, I am confused as to why they would be giving the progestrone. Could it be for another reason?

No Scott I don't think you missed anything. In spite of the strong evidence that low progesterone in otherwise clinically normal mares is NOT a problem resulting in early embryonic loss the diagnosis and treatment is still standard in many (most?) places. Complaining is likely to be fruitless but you should forward them the article on the subject. Take heart that it is unlikely to hurt anything and good luck with this years pregnancy. DrO

Look at it this way Scott. I owned a mare whom we turned inside out but she for years did the same thing as yours[talking about12 years ago] Then a very well known vet suggested this treatment and she gave us without problems three foals![look at the picture in my profile] The fourth year she was at a stud farm they forgot and she still stayed in foal and delivered. I am sure my faith in the treatment helped her on her way! And as Dr. O said nor ill effects seen Jos

Scott, Same here as jos. My mare had absorbed the year before after 60 days and the stallion station the next year had her on regumate and progesterone. Also, she had twinned and they had pinched one off. The bill was high and it seemed they were testing her all the time. The next year she twinned again but was absorbing one of the embryos so we put her on regumate again. She produced another beautiful foal. This year, we haven't done anything and she is doing fine and will deliver in June. All the best. Suzanne
