My 3 year old standardbred trotter, who showed a lot of promise as a 2 yo, suffered a fractured coffin bone in his right hind foot. After waiting 10 days and re x-raying, it was determined that it was a "wing fracture that did not seem to extend into the joint." Our vet said that 4 months of stall rest with the clipped shoes should be sufficient. After 2 months of stall rest the vet x-rayed the injury and indicated that it was healing real well, there seemed to be a good union of the bone but the fracture did extend a bit up into the joint (originally it was thought that the joint was not involved). My trainer discussed with me the possible use of Tildren to aid in the healing process. The vet said it would be helpful, but to wait until the course of stall rest was over and not to give the Tildren until the horse is back doing light exercise. Anyone have any thoughts on this use of Tildren? Thank you! Peter

Hello Peter, Tildren is in the class of drugs biphosphonates, that slows bone resorption and is often used in humans to treat osteoporosis. I have not seen any work of its use in treating fractures in a horse that does not have osteoporosis. Or one that does for that matter. Bone resorption is a normal part of bone metabolism especially in repair. Interfering with this process in a normal individual will have uncertain results and the prognosis without its use is very good. DrO

Hello Peter, I've followed a post by Dawn Winans concerning a Tildren Study. Here is the associated link: https://www.horseadvice.com/horse/messages/4/196271.html There are other posted discussions about Tildren...use the search option. Tonya

Tonya, the problems here are very different with very different prognosis without treatment. I do not see any conclusions Peter can draw from Dawns experience. In fact I remain uncertain whether Dawn received with placebo or not yet. From her last post she is still in the experimental stage. DrO
