Hello, I have some ACE injections that my vet gave me last Fall, so just under a year ago. They've been stored in the fridge -- would they still be ok to use? Would I need to get them to room temperature first? I've never given an injection before, but am considering during neighborhood fireworks tomorrow for 4th of July. There have been some prelim displays that the horses just aren't getting used to. Is there anything else I can try? I have some Rescue Remedy too, but haven't tried it on the horses yet. Thanks!

Hi CP I'm not sure of the shelf life of ace...I thought it was dated? If your nervous about shots I'm pretty sure injectable ace can be given orally also. We use to put some on a horses grain, takes awhile to work, seems to me about an hour, but that was a long time ago. I hope you survive the fireworks.

oh, I'm intrigued by the possibility of giving this orally! Hopefully DrO will chime in before tomorrow night (although there will probably be plenty of works tonight). My shots aren't dated, my vet took them out of her vile and she's out of town so I can't get in touch with her to ask. I only have 2 shots for a 900# horse so I'll have to figure how to best dispense for the 3 of them. Maybe just give to the 2 that get the most nervous.

Cp I read the article and it does say right in there it can be given on feed. I wanted to make sure I didn't make a mistake...my memory is not what it use to be! From the article For sedation: 0.5 - 4 mg / 100 lbs bwt. SC, IM, or IV. Intravenous injections should be made slowly. Tablets or injectable can be placed on food.

Typically, you need a higher dose for oral administration and it takes longer to take effect. IM shots are no big deal. I'm sure you can do it.

cp, The expiration date will depend on the expiration date on the bottle that your veterinarian has and it is thought once removed, it shortens the life. That said, ace is pretty stable if kept out of the light and does not break down to toxic products but I cannot recommend its use without you speaking to your veterinarian. DrO
