Hi Dr. O

Very weird question but how long would the effects of one gram of bute last in a very large, say 1200 lbs. warmblood? Does it peak at 12 hours and then trail off by 24 hours? Would even one gram of bute effect such a large animal? Sorry to ask such a weird question but I've been reading conflicting information about peak effects and duration of the drug.

Yes Sandy one gram has an effect but that is not saying the same as it will achieve the desired results and larger doses can be used... Concerning once or twice daily dosing, better pain and antiinflammatory action is achieved when the 24 hour dose is divided in half and given at 12 hour intervals. It is probably less toxic that way too.
