My horse is suffering from skin allergies and he has been started on allergy shots and hyDrOxyzine. As we increased the concentration of the allergy shots this week, he has a very bad reaction that caused him to develop weeping lesions and inflamed patches of skin. The dermatologist put him on prednisolone to help counteract the outbreak. He is getting 400mg every day for 3 days and then 400 mg every 48 hours for 3 days. I am just wondering if this is a safe dose and if this duration of treatment is considered "short". I am very worried about complications from the prednisolone. I have heard bad stories of horses foundering from steroid treatments. If it helps in considering the dosage amount, my horse is a 17h big TB - estimate to be 1000/1100 lbs. Any thoughts on using this drug for treating allergies would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I would estimate a 17h TB in good condition considerably more than 1100 lbs but the dose you state are reasonable and short term. For more on this see the Steroid Overview article as well as the article on Prednisolone.
