I have searched this site, thinking I read somewhere that MSM can be counterproductive with some horses--older horses, horses with ringbone? I cannot find the post or article and would love to read it again. Does anyone know whether there is such info here and if so, where? (Add if it's right in front of my nose, well, how embarrassing!)

We have information on MSM at Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Glucosamine, ChonDrOitin Sulfate, and their use in Arthritis. DrO

Yes, thank you, Dr. O. I did read that article. However, is there a place on the site--or do you know whether I am nuts-- that says in some cases MSM can cause symptoms to worsen? I swear I saw that and would like to share it with barn manager and vet.

Elle, If you are nuts, we both are. I also remember reading something like that about MSM, but am not sure it was on HA. It might have been in one of the the magazines like Equus or The Horse. It seems like it related to Cushings horses?? But is was some time ago. If I get some time today I'll try and remember to search. You have my curiosity up. It always bothers me when something "rings a bell" and I can't remember it!

I seem to recall something to the effect that it may be contraindicated when a horse is on daily wormer. Also, I have read that using it may be contraindicated in horses over about 20-years old.

One of the arguments against MSM is that only very tiny amounts make it into the blood not broken down in the gi tract. So if we saw a worsening of symptoms it would seem most likely to have been incidental and not causal to the MSM administration. DrO

Thanks, Dr. O, Vicki, and Sara. I'm glad to know I'm not as nuts as I was beginning to feel. I think you might be right about our reading such info in Equus or a similar place--maybe HORSE JOURNAL? In any case, thanks, Sara, for offering some help; I, too, shall look around.

I have done some searching on the Net and on this site. Here, I have found a lengthy discussion on MSM, with some posts by our dear friend Holly Wood about a vet recommending MSM not be given to horses over 20. I'm not sure this is the post I think I remember, but it's at https://www.horseadvice.com/horse/messages/4/8160.html DISCUSSION ON CUSHING'S AND NUTRITION.

From Page 85 of Help Your Horse Live A Good, Long Life by Karen E.N. Hayes, D.V.M., M.S.: (She is a proponent of MSM in some cases). "By the way, there is a prevailing legend floating around, that representatives at Pfizer (makers of the daily dewormer Strongid C) don't disclaim, indicating that there might be a negative interaction between pyrantel tartrate and the nonprescription anti-inflammatory medicine MSM (methylsulfanylmethenamine). If your horse takes MSM for arthritis, and you also give him daily dewormer, I recommend that you have your veterinarian draw a blood sample to check your horse for elevated liver enzymes. You know how Internet legends go -- they spread like wildfire whether they're true or not. I can't confirm or refute the legend; it could be pure fiction, or it could indicate that in some (but not all) horses, there's and interaction." As to MSM in horses over 20 years, a thread on this site discusses this, go to: https://www.horseadvice.com/horse/messages/4/61823.html
