Posted on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 - 7:24 pm: Hello all-I have been looking for any recent articles on the efficacy of oral HA. The posts and articles I see seem to be at least one year old. Also, is there any difference in the absorption if its given in the form of a powder vs a liguid or gel? Sara |

If it is degenerative joint disease (chronic arthritis) you are interested in see Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Glucosamine, ChonDrOitin Sulfate, and their use in Arthritis. It covers the oral nutraceuticals including hyaluronate. I see the title is not very clear on this. You should also check out the article on Overview of Arthritis as it covers this subject too. Note that all these articles are updated frequently as new information comes in regularly. DrO |

She was very surprised and was emphatic that the dogs improved We put our dog on it and after one month, we feel there is a noticeable improvement in his movement." One swallow does not make a summer" but I feel that although Science is necessary for advances in Medicine, many results are questionable and herbs and medicine may very well be of benefit, if proven that they have no known damage resulting from them |

My dog, now 12, is a mutt with little dog legs and a big dog body, and has been arthritic for years. I have been giving him glucosamine and chonDrOitin treats for years. Those that actually have therapeutic levels in them are pretty expensive, but every time I try to cut down, he clearly gets worse. And since he doesn't know it's medicine, I doubt the placebo effect is the reason for the improvement.Sara, I have an older horse with sever low ringbone. I did try various joint supplements on him. The only one that I thought might be having an impact was the one with the highest dose of HA...naturally, the most expensive. But I started giving it at the same time that I changed farriers, and I have never been sure whether the improvement was due to one, the other, or both. He does have periodic flare-ups which I have treated with naproxen sodium. He is having one now that so far hasn't responded, and I have been thinking about trying again...assuming I can squeeze the $$ out of my now tight budget! I'll be interested to hear what you might decide to try, and whether you think it helps. Kathy |

He was never stiff or lame until the last week of his life after he'd had a stroke. My son's older dog was starting to walk stiffly and she now gets oral HA with glucosamine and has improved greatly. We give it to our older stallions, and I use it for my knees. Obviously, I think it makes a difference! |

For a detailed discussion on this check out Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Oral Glucosamine, ChonDrOitin Sulfate, and Hyaluronic Acid, their use in Arthritis. Posted on Saturday, Jan 23, 2010 - 3:46 am: Sara,as I will be coming to the USA from Portugal, shortly, for a consult /treatment for my one knee, could you please give me the name of the Oral HA you have taken for YOUR knees. Here in Portugal chonDrOitin+glucosamine as a combination, is NOT available for people (only glucosamine itself and it tastes horrible! ) but it is available for Veterinary use,( and KATHY in NM yes it is expensive at 85dollars for 60 tabs) I want to stock up Sara on the oral HA for when I return home. Dr. O. I hope it doesn't upset this site to get human/personal. Should I ask the members for an Email ? Thank you. |

If it upsets him,he's been very patient with us all and allows us to continue. Some of us have "known" each other for several years and often have difficulty even sticking to the "subject at hand." At least you're still on the same subject more or less! The brand I take is made by Platinum Performance. www.platinumperformance.com They also make the stuff I give to horses and dogs. I don't know if they are any better than anyone else, but I started using it after being in the barns at the World Cup and learning that many horses were on that brand of supplements and trainers and riders used it too. |

Posted on Sunday, Jan 24, 2010 - 9:53 am: It is the same product, but the company makes and bottles it in human and dog size pills as well as the powder for horses. In the past I used msm with glucosimine for myself that was the same as for horses. I just put a teaspoon in some orange juice. I "guesstimated" how much per 100 lbs of horse the horse dose was and took that. This was before it came out in dosages for people. Looking at the bottle, the Ortho-Chon for people has:Glucosamine 507mg, msm 400mg, cetyl myristoleate 15 mg,boswellia serrata 154 mg, vit c 62mg, cat's claw 15mg, phellodenDrOn amurense 400 mg, turmeric 234 mg, and horsetail 47 mg. I would assume that if you took 507 mg/day all the other stuff would be in the right dosage. |

The gallon contains enough for up to 256 days. There was a long thread on this on the COTH forum. It's a very, very good deal.
