Posted on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 3:35 pm: I am treating my nieces horse for a gutteral pouch infection and right now we have her on 30cc of Naxcel and the vet wants me to begin giving her 30cc of Penicillin per day. Because of a situation from years ago where I had a horse die after an injection of Pen, (I had been giving shots for many years before this happened and all precautions were taken), I will no longer use it.Does anyone have any suggestions as to something that will work as well as the Penicillin? Our vet really doesn't want me to use anything but that and to be honest, I just can't get over that horrible memory from years ago. Thanks! |

Posted on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 8:49 pm: Hi Diane, thanks for the comment! I hadn't heard of Tribissen but the Naxcel is costing us $120.00 for a 3 day supply so anything cheaper than that would help!Dr. O, I had read that there is a Penicillin that does not contain procaine and so it doesn't have the danger of reaction. Is this true and if so is it something that I can administer myself? |

Posted on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 10:26 pm: Welcome Teri,We currently have someone on the board who reported a death associated with trimethoprim sulfa, a clostridial colitis. The point here is that all drugs have potential side effects. Those from procaine penicillin are no larger than other medications with careful use but occasionally problems will occur. After the initial shock the wise person will try and take a objective look to be sure they don't use just their single experience as a guidepost that leads them to an even worse decision. There are many forms of penicillin Teri and we discuss them and their differences in the article on Penicillin associated with this forum. The important question here however is do you know what organism you are treating and what it's sensitivities are? DrO |

You are right and I do need to get over what happened in the past and face this fear but I am so scared of having this happen again. The only thing I know at this point is that we are treating a gutteral pouch infection brought on by a very bad case of Strangles. I've had horses for over 30 years and this has been the worst case of strangles I've ever dealt with. Teri |

We have a subtopic guttural pouch emphyema, diagnosis and treatment in the Strangles article: Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Strangles & Streptococcus equi.DrO |

Posted on Friday, May 22, 2009 - 5:26 pm: Thanks Dr. O That is a very informative article and I appreciate your help, however, when I asked my sisters Vet about the non-procaine pen he told me there was no such thing! I am going to print your article and present it to him and then wait for his answer! |
