Posted on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 2:39 pm: Mare was checked on Friday and had a 20mm follicle on left side, mult. small follicles on the right. Checked again today (Tuesday, so 4 days later) and now has a 27mm follicle on the left, still has lots of little ones on the right, appears to have a CL (?) no heat in the uterus and cervix is tight.I am going to be out of town this coming weekend and through Wednesday of the next week. Vet suggested giving Lutalyse this FRIDAY before I leave (that would be 3 days from today) and check her again when I return home on Thursday (so 6 days from administering Lutalyse). I am concerned that the lutalyse might hasten the development of that 27mm follicle and I will miss breeding her while I am gone. Am curious to get additional input on this. Thanks! CC |

Posted on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 9:58 pm: Hi CC,Where is she in her cycle? In other words, when did she last ovulate? Of the 2 mares I breed right now, one has a ~27 day cycle and ovulates at >42mm; the other runs regularly on a near 29 day cycle, but ovulates small (32-35mm). So I would say that it depends very much on your mare, her normal pattern, and how/whether she responds to the drug (one of mine responds as if she's read the pamphlet, the other doesn't budge). Knowing the mare's pattern is huge for repro.... I'm not a vet or a repro. specialist. Just sayin' how it works at my place! |

Posted on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 11:10 pm: Unfortunately this mare doesnt have much of a pattern... not thus far. This is only my second year breeding her, so haven't pinned her down yet!She is on her 30 day heat. She ovulated on foal heat on day 10. We shipped on her on foal heat but she had already ovulated when we got the semen. Put it in her anyway, but she didn't settle. Today would be 31 days post foaling, so 21 days post ovulation of last heat cycle. My vet feels that she's just going to sit there and not ovulate on that follicle... feels that we need to give lutalyse to get rid of the CL and start over with her. We've had a lot of rain here the past few weeks, so it's been very overcast and my vet says she's seeing a lot of mares come to a screeching halt and not have much activity. I'm just concerned that she's being hasty with the lutalyse, that we should wait and see what that 27mm follicle does... but I'm not a vet ;-) so hate to second guess her! |

If you have different goals than your vet you need to have a heart to heart talk. I do think your history is a bit odd as to the rapid ovulation of the first follicle and rapid development of the second follicle. Isn't a slow moving follicle more likely? But there is a way to tell if the CL seen on the US is active: is the cervix / uterus edematous or tight? You can make good decisions about that possible CL with this information. You can read more about this at Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artificial Insemination » Heat Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination. DrO |

Posted on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 10:30 am: Hi DrO,I was also guessing she had a slow moving follicle; however, my vet seems to think she's just going to sit on that follicle and not ovulate it? Feels we are better off giving the prostin than waiting for this follicle to do something. I thought that if there was a large enough follicle present, administering prostin could cause rapid ovulation of said follicle, in which case we would have to start all over again once she starts to build another CL. My vet did check the cervix and it was closed. Thanks! CC |
