This afternoon I decided to let them out to stretch their legs before the next rain storm and Hank really didn't want to go out The 2 old geezers went right out. I encouraged Hank to go out and right before he did he had a BM that I wouldn't call normal. It had 2 formed balls and the rest was mush(not what I would call watery diarrhea ) but very close. It was also an off brown color. He did finally go out and graze with the oldies, his appetite seems normal pretty much, he isn't quite as enthusiastic as usual, but eating and drinking fine. I read the article and since he doesn't have "diarrhea" just mush(with water at the end) I was wondering if I should stop the SMZ's? I did call the vet and left a message to see what he says. |

The theory I think is that the antibiotics kill the gut bacteria too. I had that experience with a foal and gave her probiotics which cleared it up in 24 hours. However, Dr. O says the watery stools are transient and will clear on their own, so I discontinued the probiotics and while her stools are softer and not totally formed, they aren't diarrhea or "mush" as you say. I guess you'd be safe to wait and see if this situations comes right on it's own and continue with the SMZ's which is what I was giving. |

Diane, I don't know the milligrams of your SMZ tablets, but I had an adult mare on them--900 pounds, and she had ten 2X daily and my foal--about 260 pounds--gets 3 2X daily which leads me to believe my vet perscribes about one tablet per 100 pounds twice a day. I know Hank doesn't weigh 1200 pounds and I'm sure he's more than 600 pounds, so maybe double check your dose. |

Hank probably goes around #1000's from what I read the dose is 1 pill per 110#'s so his dosage is close.I haven't heard from the vet so I think I may error on the side of caution and discontinue. His BM was also a weird brown color and he isn't quite acting himself. |

Though I do not remember the circumstances of Julie's case I have lost far more horses to colitis induced by antibiotics than I have to ill defined local swellings. You should discontinue until you have spoken with your vet.DrO |
