I know there are 2 FDA approved Yohimbine injectable drugs available in the US. Can products available outside of the US be used in veterinary medicine (perhaps generics)? Could it be considered an herbal supplement?

Hello Mary, When you say "can?" I presume you mean "is it legal?" There are certainly foreign made drug products that can be used in this country but I am not aware if there are any such yohimbine products. As to the status of herbal supplements containing yohimbine, I do not have any information on that. DrO

Thanks for the reply. I suppose to be more technical I should have asked "Is it legal to use foreign produced and not FDA approved drugs in practice?" I would think not but am not familiar with Veterinary medicine practices. Mary

The veterinarian can use any drug he deems fit and that his license and DEA permit does not forbid. If not FDA approved for the specie, or if it is a non-labeled use of a FDA approved product, (s)he might run a higher risk of liability if things go amiss. However the wide spread and generally accepted use of a non-labeled product is not considered legally risky. Adverse effects can and will come with the use of any product on occasion. As veterinary licensing is done by the state there may be variations in what is allowed. I am not aware of any state practice act that has a FDA requirement for the medications he uses. DrO
