I have a 10 year old Haflinger mare who is being bred 7 hours from home. We will bring her back after an ultrasound confirming heartbeat, around 30 days gestation. She is nervous in the trailer and the breeder wants to give her a sedative as well as a shot of Regumate to make sure she doesn't absorb the pregnancy due to stress. The above article really questions the use of Regumate for this. How valid are concerns re pregnancy loss in this situation? (this is her 4th foal) There may also be a new horse upon her arrival home. Could this cause a mare to absorb a pregnancy? What about sedating a newly pregnant mare? I'm feeling like she does not need drugs, but we also want to help ensure a healthy pregnancy. I'd love any thoughts on all this? Thank you! Annyb

Hello Annyb, Research into mares traveling with early pregnancies shows there is little concern for embryonic loss and I am uncertain how a new horse at home might cause a loss. Perhaps if the horse is carrying a infectious disease or they get in a fight and the pregnant mare is injured. Neither do I feed a light sedation with most sedatives run a significant risk of causing trouble. I am uncertain as to what my advice would be if I personally knew the horse so my advice would be to follow your own feelings on this. Nothing can insure a healthy pregnancy and each of these issues have positives and negatives that are very hard to balance. DrO
