Posted on Thursday, Jun 10, 2010 - 3:01 pm: Dr O,Dillon, my 2 yo gelding, apparently walked out of the stall lame yesterday, so the barn manager gave him bute and left him in. Later that day, when they looked at him again, he appeared "uncomfortable" so they gave him banamine. He is due to show at Upperville this Sunday. There is a disclaimer form on the USEF that says both drugs can not be present in the blood at time of competition. I called the USEF and the guy there told me that I might as well not fill out the form becuase the drugs would still be in his system. There is another form that is just a medications form that allows medications for therapeutic reasons, but is an abcess or a bug bite medication therapeutic? I am very confused. Alicia |

Having these drugs given 4 days prior to the testing they are likely not to be in a concentration that triggers a problem, particularly when documented in the therapeutic form particularly if the statements are signed by the administering veterinarian. I could be wrong but that is my opinion. DrO |

I don't want to have any chance of paying 3K, so Dillon is staying home. He will be going out again next weekend, and I sent the info to the barn manager, so they know now not to administer them at the same time!!! thanks for your response. Alicia |

If I understood the article, mixing of different NSAID can result in much stronger effects than the single drug. It can be dangerous for the animal. The rule is intended to prevent this behavior. |

Also, I agree with Guy, about the strength of giving Bute and Banamine together and I agree with Dr. O that 96 hours out(4 days) is enough time for both of these drugs to be well below the allowable limits to compete. However, I feel better that you pulled your horse, that was the right thing to do for the horse. He is only 2 and will have plenty of time to deal with his showing career, once whatever the issue was that started this has been cleared up. Good Luck with him! Rachelle |

Upperville is a BIG show, and a win there is a BIG deal. I don't think he needed to stay home for his well being. He handles showing like a pro, as he has been out a lot. But that is neither here nor there, I now know the rule and will modify my treatment before shows as a result of this. Thanks! Alicia |
