Hi Dr. O: I have a pony that requires some work under his dock to remove a nasty ball of matted hair. Having worked for a couple of weeks to remove the mat, my vet suggested using some Ace just to allow me to really get under there and cut away the remaining hair. I picked up the Ace tablets from the office and the dosage reads 1-2 tablets as needed. The tablets are 25mg. Looking at the article on Ace, it refers to a dosage of up to 4.0mg per 100 lbs. Is this the dosage for all methods of administration? ie: IM, IV and orally? If my calculations are correct, this pony at 500 lbs should receive a 16mg dose. I am just wondering if one tablet at 25mg should be enough to get him to stand still or if I should use the higher prescribed dose of 2 tablets being as it is going to be given in feed (looks like the effect can be weakend if it is given orally?). Just don't want to overdose him (or underdose him for that matter!) I was planning to give the tablets whole mixed in with a little pelleted feed (the only feed he will eat). Thanks very much

Hello Boomer, Proper dosing with sedatives without exam is difficult because the personality of the horse will determine the effects of any particular dosage. If your vet feels two tablets are safe and you have some tough work to get done on a difficult to work on horse, I would consider using two. But I do not know if that will keep your particular horse still. Be sure to give it to a calm horse and make no attempt to disturb the horse until he is noticeably sedated. Work in a manner that backs off if the pony is getting upset. DrO
