One thing I have wanted to try on my old girl is Surpass, but with the price of it I have been hesitant. I have read through the threads here and no one really seemed to think it helped. I was telling my friend about how I would like to try it on Flash and she said she had the human version of it Voltaren. (Which is WAYYY cheaper than surpass and you don't need an RX anywhere EXCEPT the US)

We tried it on Flashes hocks and me and my friend saw an appreciable difference, has anyone had a good response to Surpass in their horses with arthritis?? I'm going to try the Voltaren on her for a few more days and if it keeps working may get some Surpass, the human version is a gel, wonder if that would work better than the horse version. Hear tell the human version Voltaren is only $8 a tube at Walmart in Canada...No RX I have found it online overseas and Canada quite cheap.

I haven't used it on the horses, but do use it on my arthritic hips and shoulder and I think it helps a lot. I suppose some would say my response is "all in my head" but who cares? It doesn't take much, either, so the tube goes a long way.

Another thing that I've had good luck with on the horses is Arnica extract. It was recommended to me by the vet that did a knee surgery on one of our mares years ago and I think it helped her a lot. I've used it on knees and hocks of several of our old girls and feel it helps them. I think it's cheaper than the Surpass, too. I tried the Surpass on myself as kind of an experiment after talking with my vet (who also uses it.)

Diane, I don't know if it will help Flash or not, but be careful about purchasing drugs over the internet - many are counterfeit with no active ingredients at best and frequently the quality control is poor i.e. the products are exposed to inproper handling such as excessive heat or humidity, rendering actives ineffective.

Well I put some more on today and it really does seem to help her quite a bit, enough that I think I'll try the surpass.

The point about the voltaren(which is exactly the same drug and percentage of drug) is over the counter in every country EXCEPT the US. In turn it is about 6 times cheaper.

Sara I got some on my stiff hands when I put it on Flashes hock, and it DOES work Of course it has potential side effects if over used. It really does seem to help Flash quite a bit!
