Hi there - this may seem like a silly question but, just wanted to clarify prior to vaccinating. My mare is 9.5 months pregnant. I will need to give her vaccinations soon. She got quite stiff in the neck this year with the PM Rhino's. So I am concerned about giving her the annual vaccination's. There are two questions involved: #1 Banamine or Bute prior to vaccinations to reduce soreness? Mare is not normally on any inflammatories except some Yucca for a sidebone. Any comment about long term use of Yucca in pregnant mares? my vet said OK. #2 New Intervet Prestige V+WNV-Prestige V+WNV-1. Heard anything on new vaccine? Will it be ok to use this all in one vaccination on pregnant mare or should I get some sort of combo... or does it matter? Thats it - I would appreciate good input.... Thanks Stephanie

Hello Stephanie, #1 Considering the mare is pregnant I would not predose with flunixin unless I was fairly sure she was going to react. Then at the first signs of reaction treat then. However you need to have this plan approved by your veterinarian. #2 I have not heard anything about this new vaccine. From a safety standpoint I do not think it will matter whether you give a combination or multiple injections. DrO

Hi Dr. O - just to clarify.. #1 - you say no on the Banamine... how about a couple grams of bute? She did have reaction to the last 3 Preg mare rhinos and this is my concern. #1b - have you heard anything contraindicating Yucca in the pregnant mare? Thanks so much Stephanie

If I were going to use a NSAID in a pregnant mare I would prefer flunixin over bute. I have heard neither positive nor negative information about Yucca in the pregnant mare. DrO
