Hi Dr O, Is it safe to ACE a horse in order to vaccinate? I have to administer an EIV/EHV and an EWT+WNV to our 3 year old rescue filly. If she moves around for injections as she did for her first hoof trim, it will not be very successful... We’ve spent a lot of time desensitizing her neck area in preparation for this, but she will still get nervous when even the slightest thing is out of the ordinary, especially on her right side. I don’t want this to be a traumatic experience for her as she is just starting to trust people. Thank you, Lee C

Hello Lee, Though one can propose unlikely scenerios where the complications may be worse when used together, vaccination will not increase the risk of using acepromazine significantly nor vice versa. DrO

Thank you, Dr O. I think I will give her one vaccine and then wait a couple of days before giving her the other - just so there is not so much 'stuff' in her system at once. Perhaps the 1st will go so well that I can do the 2nd without the ACE Lee C

Just thought I'd let you know the outcome of this... I gave her 45mg of Ace granules with a bit of grain (she tapes at 1087lbs) and waited about 2.5 hrs. Her demeanor did not seem any different with the Ace. I haltered her and groomed her in hand as I usually do. Lots of neck scratching which she loves. Inserted the needle (I opted for syringe attached) with one hand while continuing scratching with the other. She raised her head upon insertion, but lowered it as I kept scratching and stood while I injected. I decided to get it all done and did the 2nd vac on the other side as well. Afterwards lots of scratching and rubbing and when I unhaltered her she followed me around for more scratches . Will do her boosters without the Ace. Lee C
