Dr. O- I recently heard from a friend's vet (and feed store clerk) that feeding joint supplements containing MSM effectively renders daily deworming products like Strongid C2X and Nu Image Guardian useless. Both daily dewormers contain Pyrantel Tartrate 2.11% as the active ingredient. The vet wasn't specific as to how much MSM had the power to do this. It is disconcerting, to say the least, to think that I may have literally been pooping away my money on dewormer by feeding joint products containing MSM, not to mention putting my mare at risk of infestation. Do you have any information to back this up? I can't find any mfr. info. BTW- I do use ivermectin paste dewormer 2x/yr. Thank you.

We have heard this before and there is no reason I know of to believe this. However we do know daily dewormers are becoming increasingly ineffective do to acquired resistance by the parasites. For more on this and how to tell if your deworming program is effective see, Care for Horses » Deworming & Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming. We also believe that MSM is very unlikely to have any therapeutic effects.
