Hi Dr. O!

While I was watching my 25 yo Arabian gelding eat the other day he started to DrOp his penis somewhat as he relaxed. I wanted to check for a bean and get some of the junk off. I wasn't able to get a good look because he pulled it back up almost right away. However, there is something I noticed that has me concerned. I found what, at first glance, could be described as looking like a small tick on the end of his penis. However, as I was trying to get a better look, I realized it was actually some type of growth. It started to slightly bleed as I was trying to see if it would "wipe off". So, tonight I am going to give him some Ace in order to get him to DrOp completely so I can clean and inspect his penis really well, and also get some pictures of the small growth.

I've read your article about the dosing but I am wondering if there is a "go-to" dosage for sheath cleaning...enough to get him to completely DrOp, but not necessarily heavily sedate him. He is 25 yo and about 930 - 950 lbs. He is fairly tolerant and I don't expect him to kick out or object too much to the cleaning. Over the years I've had the vet do it a few times while doing dental work, etc.

Thanks for the advice,

Jayne

Oh, I will add that he is in good health with the only thing bothering him being the excessive heat we are having here in Atlanta.

Hello Jayne,
In a calm older horse I would typically start with 2 cc ace per thousand lbs IV. I would double that if I were giving it to him IM or orally. You should wait about 15 minutes IV and 30 minutes otherwise.
