While browsing the details of a joint supplement offered by SmartPak, I notice one precaution not to use it without consulting a vet if a horse has indications of hyperglycemia. Hmmm. Then while crawling around the 'net with google, there appears to be some concern about glucosamine and diabetes in humans, and some similar references to horses with metabolic issues ... but they were more obtuse to di-cypher. Anyway, is there a contraindication? Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris, You see this a lot but I have ever found any such problems in research. The latest from the diabetes research organization concurs: Diabetes Metab Res Rev. 2011 Jan;27(1):14-27.Nevertheless, based on available evidence, we conclude that GlcN has no effect on fasting blood glucose levels, glucose metabolism, or insulin sensitivity at any oral dose level in healthy subjects, individuals with diabetes, or those with impaired glucose tolerance. Hello CHris Mills in NC. I'm glad you brought this question up as I remember having the same concerns during the 6 years I had my beloved Banner on Pergolide for Cushings. That was 3 years ago and I had the same concerns when I talked to my vet and I think back then, we just used a different supplement, maybe the conDrOitin approach? Glad to see though that research has shown that glucosamine doesn't appear to have a negative affect as it seems to be a very popular supplement.
