Hi All - I currently have a 3 month old warmblood baby. He is a big boy. In the last few weeks his little fetlock joints have become puffy - we are experiencing growing pains. I have attempted to reduce feed for both mare and baby. It has not made much difference in little Rubicon... My vet has instructed me to reduce his play time.. so he and Mom have been closed up at night. In addition if he gets too upright or crooked through the fetlock joint I have given him 0.5 gm bute am/pm and usually within a day he is better and more relaxed. Seems to do well for a few days and then we repeat the process.

I have heard of breeders utilizing Adaquan to reduce the pain and avoid the bute. After looking at the Adaquan website, I see no studies for foals. Has anyone seen any studies as to the effectiveness and safety of Adaquan in foals? Also - does anyone have any first hand experience?

Dr O. - what do you think?

Thanks so much

Hello Stephanie,
There is no reason to not believe that you would get the same effects in a foal that you would in a adult. For more on this article on Adequan. However I am uncertain this is a sensible treatment for your foal. Important questions to answer for proper treatment are:
1) Is the fetlock swelling intra- or extra-articular?
2) What is the cause of the swelling?
