Hi Dr. O and everyone, My QH was recently diagnosed with milled DJD, so she was on Bute for 2 gm a day for 3 days. On a third day of administration right after my daughter gives her meds, we give horses supper. We noticed that she wouldn't eat her grains! That’s very unusual, so we observed her for a while, it wasn’t colic issue, looks like she wants to eat but couldn't open her mouth, and she will nuzzle her hay and grains but wouldn’t try eating it. I came to conclusion that something wrong with her mouth, since it’s happened right after administration. We try to check but she wouldn’t open it. I was reading an article on this site about some horses developed lesions in the mouth, but is it possible to have reaction on a second day of meds? Didn’t notice it on a first day. Maybe, because we didn’t feed horses at that time. Anyway, after couple of hours we came back to check on her, all grain was gun and hay to so she was hungry and we feed her full supper( we didn’t leave her much food on a first place in case of a colic). Do you think she may be allergic to bute? Never have to give it to her before we have her for 1 year now. Thanks in a advance.

Hi Natalya M, I have had this reaction with some horses given bute paste. They don't like the taste, so until they get rid of the taste in their mouths, they will refuse to eat. I try not to treat before they eat for two reasons. One the reason just given and two because I feel that the food in their stomachs may buffer the bad gastric effects of the bute. take care Rachelle

Thanks Rachelle, I hope this is the case, make me feel a little better. I usually don’t give meds on an empty stomach to; I just forgot to do it after breakfast. I probably will have to give it again soon; will pay close attention to what happening. Thanks for a quick respond.

Hello Natalya, Inappetance immediately following administration of bute orally is a common event. I agree the bitterness is the cause. For that reason I think rtrotter's idea is good. That is not the same as saying that is what your problem is however. Has the appetite returned? DrO

Thank you Dr.O Yes appetite returned after about 1.5 to 2 hrs. We give her Bute this Sunday again before lessons, same reaction. My other horses never had a problem with a Bute, but I always give a powder instead of a paste. I think you are all right probably just sensitive to taste. Now I’m feeling good about giving it to her. Thanks again.
