Posted on Wednesday, Apr 24, 2013 - 3:18 pm: Hi! Hoping someone has insight on what may be going on with my horse after his herbal treatment was discontinued. He seems to be having a reaction or withdrawal symptoms. He became symptomatic approximately 36 hours after his missed dose of herbs or from when they were discontinued.I treated my horses with an herbal cleansing per my veterinarian's recommendation. All three of my horses have been on various medications over the last three years after being diagnosed with EPM, Anaplasmosis, Lyme Like disease, etc. and I had been advised, more than one time, to cleanse their systems with herbs. I finally decided to detox their systems. Thirty five days ago I consulted with Silver Lining Herbs. Liver, Kidney, and Immune Support supplements were recommended for them. All three horses seemed fine while on treatment; however, last week blood was drawn for routine testing. Their blood was not clotting and it did not look normal in general. It looked thin in the blood tubes and foamy on top. The herbs were discontinued as a possible reason for the blood abnormalities. Their blood is clotting again; however, one horse seems to be experiencing negative side effects with removal of the herbs from his diet. He began seeming sluggish, laying down in his stall, excessive tail swishing up and down between his hind legs with force, stomping his hind leg, itchy face, biting at sheath, DrOpping from his sheath, gut sounds became sluggish to non-existent, elevated body temp. at 100.7, and hanging his head, listless; however, his appetite has not decreased-he just eats more slowly. He was given a dose of Banamine last night, soaked beet pulp, Pro-Bi at 20cc every 30 minutes for 5 doses last night, and light hay. Walking him was done as well; however, he did not seem as comfortable walking as standing. But, he wanted to eat...tried to drag me to the grass. He finally had a bowel movement, gut sounds returned, and he was feeling better last night. This morning, he seems slightly worse as far as not feeling well. He is eating more slowly, walking slowly, hanging his head; however, his guts sounds are still improved, normal bowel movements, no tail swishing, foot stomping, etc. I am hoping this some sort of unusual withdrawal period, so to speak. And that he will be feeling better soon. Any advice or similar situations from anyone else? Thanks!! Kathy in Virginia |

Posted on Friday, Apr 26, 2013 - 12:41 pm: Welcome Kathy,I am not aware of any scientific work that may support the use of these herbs to cleanse the system. Indeed these herbs contain many chemicals, some of which may be toxic, just as a prescribed medicine would. It does sound like your horse had a bout of illness that may have shown itself as mild colicky symptoms but without knowing the nature of the illness I do not have specific treatment recommendations. We do have recommendations for colic first aid at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Colic, Diarrhea, GI Tract » Colic in Horses » First Aid for Colic. Keep an eye on it and if it returns a good physical exam would be my recommendation. DrO |
