My mare was recently injected with her first dose of Adequan. She has exhibited swollen eyes, hives & diarrhea. This has been the ONLY change in her routine. I have been told by 2 veterinarians that an allergic reaction to Adequan is not the cause. I find it hard to believe that no animal can be allergic to Adequan. Has anyone else had any problems?

Have never heard of a horse having a reaction to it but that does not mean that it could never happen. My inclination would be that it is a coincidence and that something else caused the problem.

Welcome Jennifer, The problem is that Aedquan is a mucopolysaccaride with small amino groups attached. Most allergens are to fairly long chain proteins (but some polysaccarides have been thought to cause problems). Also the fact that this was her first injection makes a allergic reaction less likely. The development of an allergy requires prior exposure to the antigen (but not necessarily the same exact substance). Together this makes Adequan an unlikely cause but not impossible. You should note that hundreds of things change in your horses environment every day and since allergic responses are developed from prior exposure, the allergen might be something that has been around for a while. What is the time frame between injection and the allergic reaction you observed? DrO
