A client gave her 2 mares a lutalyse shot 10 days ago. I have been teasing the mares daily since they arrived on my farm. One mare was in a standing heat on day 6 and was successfully covered. The second mare is more nervous in her behavior and has been squirting urine and swishing her tail when teased for the last 4 days. I have brought the stallion to her twice and she will not break down, and rather starts kicking. I plan to try again tonight with sedation if she is still wanting to kick my stud. I am hoping day 10 post lutalyse is not too late! I don't dare wait any longer for her to cooperate fully or I will definitely miss ovulation. Do some mares take longer than 10 days to have a standing heat after the injection??

Hello Lauri, Yes it is possible that the mare is moving slowly and has not ovulated. But it is also possible she is a mare that does not stand well even as she ovulates. Depending on when the injection was given the mare may not have responded at all as the behavior you describe is also seen in fight or flight situation. A good past history may help you decide what is going on but it sounds like it may be time to get an experienced reproductive vet out and see what is going on. DrO

Thanks Dr. O, I am going to ask the mare owner to get an ultra sound today. This nervous mare does have continual vulva winking as well which is confusing. Her behavior is more fight or flight.

Forgot to ask, if the shot did not work at all, then she should come into a natural heat in another week then, right?

It will depend on why it did not work Lauri. If she had just ovulated it might be two weeks. DrO
