Dr. O,
my mare has recurrent uveitis, and because of this I treat her with banamine injections once a day during a flare up for about 5 days ( my vet actually had me do it twice a day, but this is a bit cost prohibitve for me and once a day seems to be working out). My question is how safe would it be to breed this mare? I am concerned of what this amount of banamine in her system might to to a foal. If there is any chance of the unborn foal having problems like ulcers, etc. later on I don't want to breed her.My previous vet that origially diagnosed the horse did not nearly treat the horse aggressively enough and I didn't have the knowledge to know better. In comparison I am a lot more satisfied with the response I'm getting from the current treatments (He also switched me to an eye ointment containing dexamethasone and we have injected the eye on two occasions because I couldn't be there to treat the eye around the clock.Am I just looking for more medical problems down the road if I breed this mare?

Hello Sibylle,
No I do not think so. There will be some increase risk, but not enough so that I would not attempt breeding myself. Why not use bute instead of Banamine. Considering the difference in cost and that there is no evidence Banamine would be better or safer than bute, it is what I use for oral NSAID treatment/prevenitive and RU.
