Hi,

I know there has been many discussions surrounding clicking in the behind, but none pertain to my question, or that I could find. I wasn't sure if this is where I should post, but because I have no lameness, I thought Protective treatments??
Anyway....
I have a 10 year old mare, who has always had clicking at the jog and canter, but has never been lame a day in her life.
I show her and also breed her. She is in foal for a late April baby. She is being worked a few days a week, at a walk, jog and lope doing pattern work.

I was never concerned about it since it never seems to affect her, but when I was riding the other day at my trainers, she suggested I put her on a glucosimine supplement just for preventative measures.

Just wondering, are all glucosamine supplements safe for pregnant mares, or do I have to be careful on which product I choose?

Because she has always been 100% sound, no inflamation etc. should I even worry about this?

Also,

Hello Shawna,
The article addresses both your questions though the pregnancy question's a bit harder to flesh out. The article lists the side effects of the use and none seem to be dangerous to a pregnant mare however there have not been any toxicity tests done on pregnant mares that I have seen. Read the article and you should be able to develop a view point based on your goals and resources.

Thanks DrO for your advice. I have re-read the articles again and again. I have decided not to give any supplements at this time. I do not want to take any chances, and since the clicking is not affecting her, I will wait until she foals, at which time, re-evaluate.

Thanks again,
Shawna
