I am confused by the dosage for Trimethoprim / sulfamethoxasole in tablet form . It is pointed out that 24mg/kg is the correct dose. The tablets are 160 mg Tri and 800mg Sulf.. DO I calculate it based on the Tri-- or Sulf..For a 500kg horse 12000mg wouldbe required do I divide that by 160 or 800

Omar, Until Dr O writes back, I read the article on this medication at the medication link....I cut and paste the following information. "Dosage is calculated by adding the trimethoprim and sulfa contenet together and calculation the dosage based on the total weight as follows: Trimethoprim / sulfamethoxasole 11 mg/lb (24 mg/kg) orally, IM, or IV every 8 to 12 hours Foals: 7 mg/lb (15 mg/kg) orally, IM, or IV every 12 hours Trimethoprim (TMP)/Sulfadiazine (SDZ) Oral Tablets: 960?s: 160 mg TMP/800 mg SDZ (uncoated, unscored tablets)" For your horse to get the correct dose which is 24 mg per kg, so you would multiply 24 X 500 = 12,000 To find out the amount you need, which according to the article on this med, the mgs are 960 mg per tab. You would do a formula to get dosages from what you have on hand. It's complicated looking in this format but you would make a proportion.... Take 960/1 tab, which is what you have on hand (put that on one side of the proportion and 12,000/x which is what is ordered on the other) you would then cross multiply 960 X X and 12,000 by 1 tab to get 960 x = 12,000 tab Then you divide 960 x/ 960 to get X alone, then 12,000 tab / 960 to get 12.5 tab = x So your answer is 12.5 tabs per dose Don't worry about the formula...I just like to always show my work....but it's essentially a proportion. If I am correct...If the tabs are 960 mg and you need 12,000mg then you would give 12.5 tabs at the prescribed intervals. Hope that helps until the vet writes back. I say, if you are ever confused, don't give a med without asking the vet.... Hope I didn't confuse you! Have a great day. v/r Corinne
