Discussion on Corta-FLX anyone? | |
Author | Message |
Posted on Saturday, Feb 26, 2000 - 10:22 am: I was wondering if anyone has used Corta-FLX with good or bad results. I have a TB which I plan to put on the supplement, but due to its price, I was hoping to get reviews before I spend the money...I had him on J-Flex, a Springtime,Inc. product but it was also very expensive and he would not eat it easily, I have to give it to him through syringes or mashes...he's very picky and very good and eating around meds. Bute is a killer with this horse- anyways, if any input is out there, I'd like to hear it before I start...Thanks. |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 2, 2000 - 3:13 pm: I use a product called Multi-Flex that works great for my standardbreds. I have been using this product for 6 years and swear by it. We chose Multi-Flex primarily because of the high levels of glucosamine per serving but also because it contains equal measures of perna mussel per serving. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you some information about this product. It's much less expensive than the others on the market today. |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 2, 2000 - 4:28 pm: Anne,I tried a small container of Corta-Flx on my horse, and did not really notice any change. It comes in a small enough package that you can try it without too much expense. If you don't notice a difference after a month, well, I would say it isn't worth the money to your horse. I did try the Multi-flex after the Corta-Flx and it seemed (power of suggestion?) to make some difference - shorter warm up and fewer instances of apparent discomfort. Another lady at the barn also tried it and thinks it helps her older horse's comfort, too. So, we've taken turns buying a tub of Multi-flex and sharing it. Her horse is pretty picky and he likes the Multi-flex on his feed. The Corta-Flx people don't tell you how much of what is in their product. So, it has a laundry list of stuff on the label, but we don't know how much glucosamine. The Multi-Flex does tell you how much of what per dose, and doesn't have a plethora of extraneous stuff in it. The granules are more substantive and apparently tasty, so they seem to be completely ingested. In the past, I'd tried J-flex on my mare - again, no real noticeable difference. It is chonDrOitin sulfate, which may or may not be more or less desireable, LOL. (Did you know it was made from bovine trachea? Ick.) It is given in small, powdery servings, so I worried that not much was actually being eaten. The problem with all these supplements is deciding if they are helping ... it is so subjective I often wonder. How old is your horse, why are you considering supplementation and what improvements are you hoping for? |

Posted on Friday, Mar 3, 2000 - 6:37 pm: Anne,I had a TBx with a very arthritic hind leg. I started him on J-Flex (double dose), which he responded well to. Then I tried the Corta-Flx as a cheaper alternative (again, double dosage). I honestly feel that he did better on the Corta-Flx that the J-Flx. (The only reason that I had him on a double dosage was that he had been rescued from starvation, and was a very hard keeper. It was speculated that he had adhesions in his digestive tract because EVERYTHING had to be doubled.) There were a couple of times when I ran out and wanted to see if I'd notice a difference, and within a week or two he'd be having problems again. Good Luck! |

Posted on Sunday, Mar 5, 2000 - 3:23 am: Anne,I give my horse DR. Bussan's JOINT RESCUE FORMULA Glucosamine+ Sulfate-99% pure. I buy it from my Vet who is a Natural Medicine Vet.for small animals and horse's. I have been giving this to him since 9/99. It contains herbal extracts of wild yam, licorice root. aloe vera, pfaffia root, red poppy flower, turmeric, white peony root, yucca, SOD,Catalase antioxidants, methioine, malic acid, polyascorbic acid, niacinamide, manganese gluconate chelate, d-calcium pantothenate. My horse, a 17 yr. old has DJD in the lower hocks and was lame from 1/99 through 7/99 then he had a shot of cortisteroid. He has not been lame since and I had him x-rayed 1/00 nothing has changed. Yet he is still sound. I have been riding him 4 days a week since Jan. getting ready for a clinic doing roll backs, flying lead changes, DrOp to trot lead changes and he is sound. I feel this has helped him. It amounts to a dollar a feeding. I give it to him once a day mixed with his vitamins and a teaspoon of applesauce to mix it together. I received a new shipment and it was another color, I wrote to the company and received an e.mail back the same day from DR. BUSSAN Jr. He informed me they do not bleach their product and that it was the herbs that at different times of the yr. change color. I was impressed. DR. Tibbits my vet said she has also seen good results in her dog patients that have been useing this product. If you are interested I will give you the address of the company. |

Posted on Sunday, Mar 5, 2000 - 9:58 pm: Anne,I used corta-flex with my older mare for three months. She did great and moved alot better. After reviewing many products I chose corta-flex. After talking with the company I did figure out the best is liquid. Also Michael Plumb recommends it highly. In reference to the person who said something about the label. They were right except, now it does state all, they made that change. Also Jeffers is the cheapst. |

Posted on Monday, Mar 6, 2000 - 1:37 pm: Hi all, I've been trying Dynamite's Free & Easy on two of my horses. I had the chiropractor out on Feb 20, received the Free & Easy on the 22nd, and started it the next day--about 2 weeks ago. My Arabian gelding (age 20) now feels almost TOO good! I haven't been able to ride because of a knee injury, but I can tell from the speed and enthusiasm he exhibits while pestering the other horses. On the other hand, I have an even older mare with ringbone & I can't tell that it's helped her at all. The chiropractic treatment certainly did, but she had not kept the range of motion he (chiro) produced. I've heard good things about "Jeffrey's Joint Jolt." (What a name!) |

Posted on Tuesday, Mar 7, 2000 - 12:03 pm: Ihave been using a product called Grand Flex for about a year on a horse that my vet gave a poor pre-purchase appraisal of due to a fexion test on both front legs. When I told him I was set on buying the horse anyway he suggested Grand Flex. I know that the stuff wouldn't have turned him into a Grand Prix jumper, but it has kept him flexible and sound for the trail riding that I intended to do. What he would have been like without it I can't say since we put him on it from day one, but I feel that he is moving so well despite his prognosis that I am willing to pay the about $1.00/day to keep him on it. |

Posted on Friday, Mar 31, 2000 - 10:05 pm: I have had better luck with chonDrOitin sulfate vs. glucosamine. My 16yr gelding seemed to show improvement the 3 mo. he was on Corta-Flx, but I to saw a much bigger difference when giving a dble. dose, but that gets expensive. I have just started on ABC's "Jeremy's Joint Jolt" (3 wks)and have found that my horse is jumping out of his skin! Will stop for 1-2 wks when this runs out to compare how he is without it! |

Posted on Saturday, Nov 4, 2000 - 7:44 pm: Hi, Jackie:How is your horse now? I'm really curious, and I would be grateful if you could tell me what company makes the "Jeremy's Joint Jolt". I'm a sports horse breeder in Portugal, and wonder if that product can be found in Europe. In the meantime, I'm using the Cortaflex with good results, but it's always interesting to learn about other options. Thanks, and all the best to you and your horses. |
