Dr. O.,
I am in the process of re breeding Lilly to Voltaire this year after she lost her first foal last year.
I know there is no way I will be lucky enough for her to not need an anti inflammatory or pain medicine in the next year.
Is there any new research on medications that deal with those issues that are safe for pregnant mares?
I know I am not supposed to use Bute or devils claw, but I am not sure what I CAN use.
Thanks!

There are no specific contraindications for the use of bute and flunixin in pregnancy although I would avoid its use during the first 16 days. Check out the article on bute, it is probably the best studied NSAID during pregnancy in horses.

Dr. O.,
OK, I will just avoid it for the first month after she is bred (to be sure).
Thanks!
