Opinions please on when to quit feeding daily MSM (5g) and Yucca (5g) prior to a competition? Three days long enough?

Hello Lynn,
Neither of these medications appear on the USEF specific forbidden list and I am not aware if they may or may not be a problem. Valerian which is forbidden is recommended to not be used 7 days prior to competition. They have just released a recent update to the pamphlet on recommendations for medications with special sections on herbs. You will find this update at Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals ยป Advice on Complying With United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Drug Rules. I should note that neither MSM or yucca has any known benefit that I am aware of when fed to horses.

PS Be patient with the page the USEF pamphlet loads slowly.

If you go to www.usef.org they publish a list of all banned substances and the amount of time a horse needs to be drug free for each drug. Many herbal and "natural" products are listed, too. Many substances need to be stopped a week or more before a competition. I'd go to the site and read the guidlines to be sure.

Yes, do check. From what I understand, endurance rules are even more strict than show rules on some substances.

Let me clear up 2 frequent misconceptions. First the forbidden list is not a complete list of banned substances, the rules will carefully explain this.

Second there are 2 different sets of drug rules the USEF provides and each equine association / endeavor chooses which set they will use. The most strict in the "No Foreign Substance" rule which is the most strict and neither medications nor forbidden substances are allowed. Then there is the "Therapeutic Substance Rule" which does allow some medications to be in the blood as long as they are below a certain level of not in combination with other substances. Check with your association for which set they use.

Lynn- AERC (American Endurance Riders Conference) has their own distinct rules, check their rule book. Basically zero tolerance save compounds to regulate estrus.

They advise withdrawal of any foreign substances 96 hours before competition.

I have done some more checking and AERC recommends that non permissible substances which
include MSM & Yucca should not be given within
96 hours of competition...thank you for all your
help...
