After reading an article last this month in Horse Illustrated (I think) I was surprised to find out that you can not give Bute IM because it may cause a severe reaction and possibly a Clostridium infection. I have never given it IM but was told when my horse injured himself last year that it was okay to give IM and I think others at the barn think it is as well. I keep PO Bute on hand instead. 1. Why specifically is it contraindicated for IM administration. I asked a vet at the training barn the other day but was only able to get a brief answer as he was busy getting ready for an AI. He said something about the acidity of it. Can you elaborate Dr. O? 2. Clostridium infection? Why would that occur with this medication and not other NSAIDs given IM. And where does the clostridium come from? I will have posted the Bute article at the barn by the time you reply but have additional questions I am curious about. Thanks!

Let me rephrase question one. I know it's tissue toxic from the article but why?

I don't know why Corrine but it is well established that it is very irritating. With many medications often the ph of the solution is the reason. You can give it IV because it is rapidly diluted. Anytime you have a area of necrosis, Clostridia is possible because it is a commonly found organism that thrives in a necrotic environment. DrO
