Discussion on "Marble" implantation for mare contraception
Author Message

I may be the victim of a cruel joke, but I was told that a new device is available to prevent cycling in mares. It apparently is a "marble" that is implanted as an intra-uterine device, which causes very little irritation or risk of side effects, and is easily removed in the case of an intentional cycle resumption. Is this a dream come true or is everyone laughing now? (P.S. my husband is asking if it matters what color the marble is, or whether to use a cat's eye or a shooter.)

I haven't heard of this re: horses but have read that desert nomads placed pebbles in female camels to prevent breeding so maybe there is something to this. Hope there is feedback on this. As the owner of one hot mare this would be very welcome news indeed.

I vote for the shooter though my 6 year old is convinced a Poke-Ball would work best. See Training Horses: Behavioral Problems: Suppressing Heat and Estral Behavior in Mares for more on this.

Dr. O...I just saw the lead tag to your response "I vote for the shooter". Reminds me of my husband's cure for horse ills..."a little lead behind the left ear". I mean, there are times one feels like being drastic. I didn't know where you were going with your comment until I read all of it. LOL.

I wonder if the marble works along the same principle as the IUD does with women? Although if that's the case, it probably wouldn't stop the cycling just conception.
