A horsewoman that I highly respect has been using a cough medication for her gelding who has major seasonal respiratory allergy problems. She finds that a syrup called Venti-Pulmin (spelling?) works very well when administered an hour before exercise. I can't find reference to this medication on Horse Advisor. Please help?

Hello Heather, Ventipulmin is the name brand for the generic clenbuterol. You will find the link to the article to clenbuterol on the alphabetical list of medications but I would also run a search on both terms as they have been discussed before. DrO

DrO - Thanks so much for your prompt response. Last spring Albuterol was prescribed for my horse when he was having symptoms described by the vet as "pre-COPD." I understand that this medication is one used on humans with COPD. From the name, I'm guessing that it is related to clenbuterol. I found the articles on the latter helpful, but am leaning now more toward the prednisone treatment. Managing his environment isn't helping much. I'm quite sure the problem is initiated by pollens, or other allergens, and am having the blood test run this coming Friday. Am not very hopeful that we will gain useful information from that, either! We are located in the Pacific Northwest (Whidbey Island).

Have you read the articles we have on COPD (Heaves is the common name)? You should also review the articles on prednisone, there are better drugs. DrO
