DR. O ... I am reading a book on equine breeding and have a question on the use of prostaglandin. If This is given in Winter(Feburary or march ) will it cause the mare to become in estrous and bring on a breedable egg? Or, in order to get the mare to become pregnant during this time of seasonal anestrus would it be necessary to give a shot of prostaglandin to bring on the heat cycle AND a shot of gonadotropin to have the mare realease an egg to make her breedable??? What are the side effects of gonadotropin in mares that it is recommended for no more than 2 shots of this in a year period? What are the "normal" uses for gonadotrpon? As I continue reading I am sure more questions will pop up!! thank you for your time Ken

No, prostaglandin only brings already cycling mares in and chorionic gonadatropin also only works on cycling mares also. The reasons for not overusing human chorionic gonadatrophin is explained in the article Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Heat (Estrus) Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination. See the side bar: Does HCG's Ability to Induce Ovulation Reduce Over Time?. Ken, I think you need to carefully review the general articles on reproduction before trying to understand the drugs actions, they will be easier to understand then. DrO
