Hi,
I'm AI'ing my mare soon. She is a barrel horse and I would like to run her this season (the reason I'm breeding is because she has so frequent and painful heat cycles, breeding her 2 years ago kept her running great last year), now it's starting again. My question is--can and when can I start running her once confirmed PG?? last time I turned her out for the whole pregnancy but this year I would like to try running her again if it would not adversely affect the foal &/or her. At 16 days(right after ultrasound confirmation)? or do I wait 30 days or longer or what are your suggestions and input on this? PS. She's not one of those "crazed barrel horses", she's very solidly trained, very hard running and no nonsense when she's not in heat. Thanks, Teri

There is a fairly high rate of early embryonic loss in all mares so you have a 1 in 7 chance of losing the foal by day 40 normally. We are not sure what the result of hard work is on early embryonic loss but research with travelling pregnant mares suggest you may be able to start immediately.
