We have a mare that we have bred to our stallion by shipped semen 4 times now. Each time she had conceived first crack with one breeding. The studs semen is extremely good and ships out of this world! My question is with this time we ordered semen and before the semen arrived the mare had ovulated. I would say we were 10-12 hours post ovulation before we got the semen in her. Based on a great breeding mare and very virile stud what would you give the chances of conception??

12 hours post ovulation...hmmm...fair but not great. There is a post ovulation window with a good conception rate and this is addressed in Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Heat (Estrus) Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination. Hopefully the time was less than 12 hours. There also is a higher incidence in early embryonic loss from day 16 to day 40 in mares bred well after ovulation so if she does catch be sure to check her after day 40 to be sure she keeps it. DrO
