I'm in the process of acquiring a rising 2 yo half draft, half light horse colt that I think may make a wonderful sporthorse prospect. Also, he is a black and white tobiano (?) and particularly nice to look at (for those of us that like color in horses)... For many reasons, I had planned to geld him as soon as possible, however, one of my friends who has an older quarterhorse mare has expressed an interest in having him breed her mare. Now, I really have no desire to be in the stallion manangement business and I have concerns about delaying his gelding just to accomadate my friend's wish. So, are there other possiblities... What is the current state of science and technology for semen collection in barely sexually mature stallions??? Can semen be frozen and if so, for how long??? I read Dr. O's article and I understand that semen produced by young stallions may only be half as effective as that produced from a mature stallion... Does anyone have any thoughts???

The only way you'll know if his semen can be frozen and still be viable is to freeze some and test it. Some stallions semen maintains a high motility and for others the semen is worthless if frozen. Also, if you are thinking of using frozen semen, or your friend is rather, make sure she has a good work up done on her mare, and that her vet is experienced. There are some excellent "stallion stations" that do collection, freezing, testing, shipping, and even mare handling and breeding. They make life a lot easier if you wind up doing this. As for your colt's sexual maturity, you might be surprised!

Thanks for the helpful advice... Oh my, so much to learn and relearn after a twenty year absence from the horse world! Now I'm off to find a "stallion station" in central Virginia!
