I have a day 16 ultra sound from one of my mares, and there is clearly one embryo. Her 2003 foaling date is still 8 weeks away. She is TOO big, and appears to be DrOpping - I can see a few ribs which never happens this early in the game. I have had 2 sets of twins in the last 5 years (different mares bred to different stallions), and the mare in question seems to look and act just the the other two twin carriers did at this stage. She was bred at a very large and reputable breeding farm, and they should have been able to locate twins at day 16. Does an embryo ever split and become twin embryos after day 16?

Not in horses Debra, identical twins (split embryos) continue to not be reported in horses.
