DR O, We have a mare that we bought recently that we were told was bred during her foal heat after foaling. At approximately 55 days after foaling she was palpated, but no ultrasound was done. We were told she was 45 days along in her pregnancy at that time. Now 7 months later, she was palpated again to reveal no foal...no pregnancy. No aborted fetus has ever been found. We are not upset that the mare is not in foal but I do have a question regarding palpation. Would palpation at 45 days post a breeding taking place during the mare's foal heat be enough to diagnos pregnancy? I have been told we really needed to have this mare ultrasounded, due to the post pregnant size and shape of her uterus. Some have said it would be hard to tell for sure the mare was pregnant considering the circumstances without ultrasound. What say you? Thanks...Debbie

I would think at 45 days, an ultrasound would be the only way to ascertain if a mare is in foal. We have always had our mares done in this manner at 45 days.

As the article associated with this forum states palpating a mare at 45 days of pregnancy is not a problem. Being 55 days post foaling should not effect this either. The uterus has long contracted back down to its normal size by this time. DrO

OK. I just don't understand what happened to the foal. I guess it must have been absorbed because the mare did not slip a fetus(as far as anyone knows). Is there any chance that she actually could still really be in foal, but the pregnancy not be felt when palpating the mare at 6-7 months along? Thanks...Debbie

The choices seem to be: 1. The vet was in error. 2. The fetus was aborted. Resorption is a bit of a misnomer: mares don't resorb dead fetal tissue but the fetus and surrounding fluids are so small the first trimester that it is easy to miss. DrO

So...what you are saying is the fetus was aborted in the first trimester...if this mare had been out to pasture at the time she aborted no one would know, as it(fetus/fluids/etc) could easily be missed because of their small size. or You say, "The vet was in error". Do you mean that the mare was never in foal to start with or do you mean the mare could still be in foal?

Yes to all 3. Not being able to examine the mare I have no idea what is going on, but all 3 happen. However it is very hard to miss a foal at 7 months. DrO

Debbie, I have had a mare abort after 45 days and it went unnoticed until palpation. That is not surprising that you missed it, if the mare was really pregnant to begin with. I hope all goes well. Bev
