My younger horse is a fading black. I've noticed that she "fades" in the shape of her saddle and girth. Today I noticed you can see where the girth stops (dressage length) and the saddle starts! I am guessing this is because of the salt in her sweat, even though she is rinsed after work on the warmer days. Her new hair coat always grows in black and then develops the fade over time. She doesn't have lighter areas around her nostrils, inside flanks, etc. like a black/mahogany bay or brown. People who know more than me say she is definitely a black. Anyone else experience something similar? Cheers.

My horse has bleached out in the two areas he sweats most. One is half-way up his neck and the other is in front of his shoulder. I will try to get some pics.

I am also blessed (cursed ;) ) with a "fading black" horse. He is a "true black", but fades to a chocolatey mocha brown. His face is always jet black, and at this time of the year, as his body clipped winter coat sheds, he's a shiny black brindle/dapple brown. It's kind of unusual, as he gets a very distinctive starburst dapple pattern, much like a grey, then he gets stripey looking, and yes, the saddle area is a more uniform mocha brown, due to sweat. It's always interesting to see how he changes color thruout the year. As he sheds out his winter coat, he will turn into a shiny, sleek jet black horse, and by August, he's already started growing in his winter coat and his summer coat has faded to brown. I tried a fly sheet one summer and he ended up fading around the neck, under the binding of the flysheet. Uck, ring around the collar. LOL! So no sheets in the summer, and I"m resigned to a fading horse, as I won't limit his turnout because of esthetics, being a horse is more important than a jet black coat anyway. :D
