Do O

I had a mare at a foaling facility last year. When she gave birth she needed assistant at three in the morning from the vet the baby was upside down plus his legs were crossed. The next day I arrived to check on the baby and noticed the placenta was hanging and the owner of the farm had a gallon of water tied to the placenta and the mare was dragging it around. The vet arrived gave the mare a shot and cleaned her out. I was going to AI this mare last week and the same vet noticed her uterus was slightly enlarged and decided to culture her and it came back dirty. So now he recommended to clean her out twice when she comes back into heat before we A I her. This mare is a very nice and valuable horse. I was thinking of suggesting to the vet to have a Cytology done, or should I just have him go ahead and clean her out when she comes back in heat and then have her AI the same heat cycle? I'm having the semen shipped from Kentucky to California. He also suggested to short cycle her?

Hello Phyllis,
If you have read our article on culturing you know what the scientific literature and my opinion on using culturing as a diagnostic technique, I use cytology. As for this mare in particular, since the culture has been done further diagnostics might depend on the exact culture results and how abnormal that uterus was. Small amounts of normal contaminants and a slight change from normal and I would want a cytology.
