Posted on Monday, Feb 23, 2004 - 2:14 am: OK I posted this on a discussion about false pregnancies but I think my post was removed..here goes: I own a 20-something y.o. mare. I bred her to an imported QH stallion and had a nice baby in 2001. Between end Feb and end April last year(2003) I leased her to a friend to be a recipient mare in an embryo transplant. She went to a breeding station for those 2 months, but they sent her back saying she is too old and she is difficult to work with. So November last year I lease her to a little kid for playdays, etc (this mare is VERY healthy and fit, looks more like a 12 year old than a 20+y.o.!!) January the mother calls me, am I sure Missy is not pregnant? No, I say, she's a good keeper they must feed her a bit less and work her more. 2 weeks ago I get another call from the mother, PLEASE will I come look they really think Missy is pregnant. SO off I go to set a worried moms mind at ease. That is, until I saw the mare! WOW! I havent seen her since November and the change is staggering. She's got that very angular shape, full in her flanks in front of the stifle, and hollowing below the hips. The rest of her is trim and in good shape, this certainly doesnt look like a grass belly. She's also rubbed her tail to pieces (only time she ever rubbed was with her last pregnancy) and is starting to form a bag. Great personality change as well, she doesnt want to be touched. So I get my vet out to palpate - she feels nothing (must add that my vet is only 6 months out of vet school and not very experienced in reproduction issues). She took blood but the results are not back yet (But I believe that if the mare is past 300 days the estrone sulfate levels will be inconclusive? Is this right?) I am getting a repro vet out to scan her this week. We spoke to the breeding station and their records are in disarray. The snr vet reckons they used her for the 1st embryo and the other mare for the 2nd embryo. The jnr vet reckons they never used her at all! There are no other stallions where we are, so that is the only place where she could have become pregnant. IF this is a false pregnancy, HOW does she change her body shape like that? She is really lop-sided too. I know there are no answers if you cannot see the horse, just looking for some support here! |

Posted on Monday, Feb 23, 2004 - 9:11 am: Welcome Liezel,False pregnancy usually refers to a mare not returning to heat even though she is not pregnant. They do not normally lactate or look pregnant. On the other hand even just 6 months out it is near impossible to miss a 300 day pregnancy on rectal palpation: We to are uncertain what is going on. Estrone sulfate remains a reliable indicator of pregnancy and fetal viability all the way up to term. DrO |
