A friend of my has a sporthorse breeding operation. She has a maiden mare that is a few days overdue. Two days ago she said the mare had "bloody show" and had blown her "mucous plug". What exactly does this event have to do with parturition? She said the mare had a bloody discharge all over her back legs. What exactly is the "mucous plug's" role in pregnancy and/or parturition?

The mucosal plug is poorly studied and not well understood Lisa. When you visually examine a pregnant mare's cervix you sometimes see a thick plug of mucous adhered to opening of the It is logical to think of it as a barrier to infectious agents. Often owners report a lob of mucous found as foaling date gets close but sometimes this occurs weeks before parturition. Of course with all the blood your friend found a thorough exam needs to be conducted to find te source.
